ENCOURAGEMENT FOR THE DAY
Freedom by a Greater Law
Romans 8:2
because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit of life set me free from the law of sin and death.
My nephews and their wives were hanging out with us this last summer when conversation rolled around to how each had become engaged. As the couples took turns describing the circumstances of their marriage proposals, Jared and Karen won the award for most unique -- Jared popped the question while on one knee during a hot air balloon ride in Napa.
In our passage today, Paul tells us "the law of the Spirit of life set me free from the law of sin and death." I thought back to Jared and Karen's balloon ride and how they were freed from the Law of Gravity by a greater law at work -- in this case the Ideal Gas Law: "For a gas with a constant molecular weight, the pressure is proportional to the product of the density and the temperature." In other words, hot air balloons can float because the air inside the balloon weighs less than the surrounding air. The air inside a hot air balloon is heated by burning a gas which is then forced into the balloon. When the temperature of the air inside the balloon increases, its density decreases -- and it floats!
Paul is telling us something similar. Paul tells us we are set free by a greater law -- the law of the Spirit overcomes the law of sin and death. We are able to sail high and free because we are in Jesus -- He is the greater law.

Did Paul tell us we are free as a result of positive thinking? How about visualization techniques? No, Paul tells us we are free because of what Jesus has done. Jesus changed the laws of the universe forever. We no longer have to die. We can be declared righteous and receive the gift of eternal life. How? By placing our faith and trust in Him alone. John 11:25: "I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live."
