ENCOURAGEMENT FOR THE DAY

Works: A Response of Guilt, Gain, Obligation or Love?

Romans 11:6
And if by grace, then it is no longer by works; if it were, grace would no longer be grace.

Previously, Paul spoke about a "remnant" of Jewish believers. Do you think this "remnant" was chosen by God because they righteously kept the Law, or were they saved by His grace? Paul says that if it is by grace then it can't be by works, because if it was, then it wouldn't be grace.
This is a very important theological point -- one which Christians struggle with each and every day. You see, what's true for Israel is true for us as well. If we are indeed saved by grace, then we need to continue to walk in His grace singularly. Unfortunately, we are often tempted to mix works into the equation. Especially when we say, "Lord, look at this good thing I've just done in your Name. Aren't I a good person? Don't I deserve a reward?" Be honest, sometimes don't you anticipate a blessing upon your life, family or ministry based upon the work you've done? I know it's a trap I can fall into from time to time. I must remind myself, "It is only by God's grace I have been blessed. Not because of anything I have done. It's not my works, prayer, devotional time, or energy level. It is only -- simply and purely -- grace."

What work are you doing for the Lord that you believe deserves reward? Come on be honest. There is a gigantic heart difference between works offered as a response to love versus works performed for gain, guilt, or out of obligation. If you are not clear on the difference -- ask any wife or mother -- she will be quickly able to explain the difference.
