ENCOURAGEMENT FOR THE DAY
The Seeds We Sow
One of the enjoyable chores of spring is the planting of seeds. I love to work the fertile soil, preparing it to receive the tiny seeds. I plant many different kinds of seed in my garden. One of my favorites is the tiny seed of turnips and mustard. They are so small and fragile, and I sow them on the surface and gently pat the soil smooth over them. Other seeds, like the corn, are much larger. I plant these seeds in little "hills or holes" and pull a generous amount of soil in around the seed. There is one thing I can depend on. The turnips and mustard seed will reproduce after their own kind and corn will bring forth more corn. This is one of the laws of nature, which God established at creation. It is dependable. It is true.
Sowing seeds in the garden always reminds me of another kind of seeds--the seeds of thought. We continually sow thoughts daily. The harvest of thought materializes true to the kind of seeds we sow in the fertile field of thought. It finds soil in the receptive mind--there to grow, multiply and bear offspring. Since we accept this as a fact, does it not seem worthwhile that we be careful of the kind of thoughts we allow to occupy the mind?
The corn seed becomes a corn plant and later produces corn. The mustard seed is clothed in green foliage. We have the option of clothing our thoughts through the tone of sincerity, sympathy, love, hatred, indifference, and so on. The clothing in which we dress our spoken thoughts may be attractive or repulsive. Our bodily impressions give life and action to our thoughts. Once a thought is born, it is indestructible. It may lie dormant for a long time, then gain power to destroy. Even unspoken thoughts can be destructive, festering like sores within us until it destroys us from within.
Many times in scripture, we are told, "Jesus knowing their thoughts asked, 'Why are you thinking evil in your hearts?'" (Mt. 9:14) In Mt 15:19 we find, "For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander." (NIV) When we plant seeds in the garden, we try to buy good seed that will produce a good crop. Are we as careful with the seed we sow in the soil of the heart? A good seed reproduces its own kind.
