BIBLE VERSE OF THE DAY
John answered them all, “I baptize you with water. But one who is more powerful than I will come, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.
– Luke 3:16 (NIV)
Today’s commentary
by Dave Whitehead, Senior Pastor, GraceNYC.org
John the Baptist did not want his listeners to be confused about who Jesus was. Jesus did not come to give people good advice or a moral example—Jesus came to baptize, or immerse, people with God’s glory and passion. This is not an invitation into a philosophy, but into a relationship with Christ that burns away ungodly motives in the loving grip of his hand. May we live in such a way that our lives demands an explanation, and when that happens, may we point to the One who is more powerful that we could ever be.
