WHAT’S IN A NAME

Today a person's name is little more than a label to distinguish one person from another.  Most of us had nicknames given to us as children or even as adults.  Often our nicknames and even real names say nothing about us as a person.

The same can be said of God or Lord, it denotes a supreme being, but what does it say of His character, His ways or what God means to us as human beings.

In Scripture the Names of God are like portraits and promises.  In Scripture  a person’s name identified them and stood for something specific.

God often changed the names of His people.  Abram meaning exalted father became Abraham, meaning father of a multitude. Sarai meaning my princess, became Sarah meaning princess. Jacob is the one who follows on another's heels a supplanter, became Israel after the great prayer-struggle at Penile.

Names carried special significance.  Look at the fact that God revealed his Names to His people, rather than allowing them to choose names for Him.

In the Old Testament there are many references to NAME.  We look to the New Testament and find Jesus is also referred to as NAME.  ‘The Name of the Lord’ or The Name of God’ refers to God’s whole character, the entire person of God.

Again and again in our research we found YHWH  [pronounced YAHWEH] which means ‘to exist, be’ it stresses God as the independent an self-existent God of revelation and redemption.  YHWH and Jehovah are the same, interchangeable.

Psalm 83:18 (AKJV)
18 that men may know that thou, whose name alone is JEHOVAH,
art the most high over all the earth.

Jesus, The Christ:  Names, Appellations, and Titles of; Which is, which was, which is to come (equivalent to the tetragrammaton (YHWH), the Eternal One, I AM THAT I AM (Revelation 1:4)

Revelation 1:4 (AKJV)
John to the seven churches which are in Asia: Grace be unto you, and peace, from Him which is, and which was, and which is to come; and from the seven Spirits which are before His throne;

In essence we are what we are called. We need to be mindful of the names we give to children, including the nicknames, and the name calling we do to others.  The words we speak do come to life as the following scriptures tell us.

2 Chronicles 18:12
And the messenger that went to call Micah spake to him, saying, Behold, the words of the prophets declare good to the king with one assent; let thy word therefore, I pray thee, be like one of theirs, and speak thou good.

2 Chronicles 18:11-13
I also could speak as ye do: if your soul were in my soul’s stead, I could heap up words against you, and shake mine head at you.

Job 18:2
How long will it be ere ye make an end of words? mark, and afterwards we will speak.

Daniel 7:25
And he shall speak great words against the most High, and shall wear out the saints of the most High, and think to change times and laws: and they shall be given into his hand until a time and times again.

Jeremiah 38:4
Therefore the princes said unto the king, We beseech thee, let this man be put to death: for thus he weakeneth the hands of the men of war that remain in this city, and the hands of all the people, in speaking such words unto them: for this man seeketh not the welfare of this people, but the hurt and the dividing of time.

God Bless
