ENCOURAGEMENT FOR THE DAY
God, How May I Serve You?
Romans 11:34b
Or who has been his counselor?
Or who has been his counselor?
Yesterday at church, the worship leader asked everyone to get down on their knees and spend a few minutes praying for our country. I started out my prayer, "Lord, thank you for this great country of ours..." I almost finished the same way I do so often, "By the way Lord...and don't forget..." All as if somehow I would know what's best for the country, myself, or the church.
Sometimes I am amazed at my own foolishness. Fortunately, I caught myself just in time. I remembered that prayer is not about getting my will done in heaven, but God's will done on earth. I changed my prayer accordingly: "God, what do You want to do in my life, in this church, in my family, and in this country? What do you want to do right here, right now?" For some of us what comes next is the most frightening prayer of all: "And Lord, what would you have me do to join you in your work? How may I serve you?"
President John Fitzgerald Kennedy once said, "Ask not what your country can do for you -- ask what you can do for your country." I think this is an appropriate position for us to hold in prayer to our Father in heaven as well, "Lord, what do You want to do?" Then, "What would you have me do?" Are you allowing God to use you individually to accomplish His purposes? Will you yield to Him?
