NAMES OF GOD continued

WORD OF WISDOM
JEHOVAH ~ It is worthy of notice that this name is never used in the LXX., the Samaritan Pentateuch, the Apocrypha, or in the New Testament. It is found, however, on the "Moabite stone" (q.v.), and consequently it must have been in the days of Mesba so commonly pronounced by the Hebrews as to be familiar to their heathen neighbours.

Another page in the Names of God. We will start with the Name of Jehovah-Jireh.

Jehovah-Jireh the Lord will provide. The word comes from the Latin meaning literally to see ahead. It also means to take precautionary measures; make preparation to meet a need; to supply something for sustenance or support; to make something available; to have as a condition. Look carefully at the following scriptures. It does not say the Lord will provide, it says “In the mount of the Lord it shall be seen.”

Genesis 22:10-20 (King James Version) 10 And Abraham stretched forth his hand, and took the knife to slay his son. 11 And the angel of the LORD called unto him out of heaven, and said, Abraham, Abraham: and he said, Here am I. 12 And he said, Lay not thine hand upon the lad, neither do thou any thing unto him: for now I know that thou fearest God, seeing thou hast not withheld thy son, thine only son from me. 13 And Abraham lifted up his eyes, and looked, and behold behind him a ram caught in a thicket by his horns: and Abraham went and took the ram, and offered him up for a burnt offering in the stead of his son. 14 And Abraham called the name of that place Jehovahjireh: as it is said to this day, In the mount of the LORD it shall be seen.

Jehovah-Nissi the Lord our Banner.
Song of Solomon 2:4 (King James Version) 4 He brought me to the banqueting house, and his banner over me was love.
Psalm 60:4 (King James Version) 4 Thou hast given a banner to them that fear thee, that it may be displayed because of the truth. Selah.

The banners and ensigns of the Roman army had idolatrous images upon them, and hence they are called the "abomination of desolation" (q.v.). The principal Roman standard, however, was an eagle. (See Matt. 24:28; Luke 17:37, where the Jewish nation is compared to a dead body, which the eagles gather together to devour.)

God's setting up or giving a banner (Ps. 20:5; 60:4; Cant. 2:4) imports his presence and protection and aid extended to his people.

Jehovah-Shalom meaning the Lord is peace.
Judges 6: 23 And the LORD said unto him, Peace be unto thee; fear not: thou shalt not die. 24 Then Gideon built an altar there unto the LORD, and called it Jehovahshalom: unto this day it is yet in Ophrah of the Abiezrites.
